  • Broward Assisted Living Facility Admission Criteria is a MUST to KNOW!

By Humberto Fortuna MA, MS Broward Assisted Living Facility Admission Criteria Did you know most Senior Housing must have an Admission Criteria Policy? It is very important to know and remember that all Senior Housing and Assisted Living Facilities in Broward County must have a written Admission Criteria Policy, by regulation. Since all Assisted Living Facilities in Southeast Florida must be regulated and surveyed to provide care to its residents, an Admission Criteria Policy should be included in your contract. In some cases, the criteria for being admitted into a Broward Assisted Living Facility is as simple as a person being able to transfer from one chair to another with assistance. This is required for some facilities, but not for every facility. The idea of being in a Broward Assisted Living Facility is for the resident to be able to assist in completing an Activity of Daily Living task. The purpose of an Assisted Living Facility is to “ASSIST,” not to actually do the task for the resident. The goal is to keep the resident as active and involved in his own personal care while performing the Activities of Daily Living. In Broward County, Assisted Living Facility Admission Criteria are not only based on clinical aspects, but on many other issues, such as safety. A prospective Broward resident must be physically able to exit the building, with assistance, in a fire drill, or any other emergency situation. In some cases, Assisted Living Facilities in Broward County will not admit people even if they can transfer. Each Broward County facility has its own criteria, their own policies, and their own target population type. They may not want wheelchairs or even walkers. This is up to each individual facility. They can implement any house policy they choose, as long as they remain in compliance with the state regulations. Broward County has very important cities such as Coconut Creek, Cooper City, Coral Springs, Dania Beach, Davie, Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Hallandale Beach, Hillsboro Beach, Hollywood, Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Lauderhill, Lighthouse Point, Margate, Miramar, North Lauderdale, Oakland Park, Parkland, Pembroke Park, Pembroke Pines, Plantation, Pompano Beach, Sea Ranch Lakes, Southwest Ranches, Sunrise, Tamarac, Weston, Wilton Manors. Because Assisted Living Facilities in Broward County are privately or corporately owned, the policies they implement are legal, as long as they are approved by the Health Care Administration in whatever state they are located. • Does Dade County have Medicaid Assistance for Assisted Living?

By Humberto Fortuna MA, MS The eligible Floridians in Dade County may have their personal care services, such as assistance with activities of daily living in an Assisted Living facility. All these services will be reimbursed under Florida’s Medicaid Long – Term Care Waiver program in Miami Dade. It’s imperative to note that ALL Dade County residents aren’t entitled to receive funding from the Dade County Medicaid Managed Long Term Care Program. The number of participants under this benefit program is limited – you may be put on a wait list and you MUST qualify financially and clinically to receive the benefits. NOT everyone in Miami Dade County who qualifies will be able to take advantage of the funding provided due to limited funding. • LGBTQ and Assisted Living Friendly Communities

By Humberto Fortuna MA, MS LGBTQ, GAY, Assisted, Living, Communities When it comes to Assisted Living placement, gay seniors face more issues than seniors from the heterosexual community. First and foremost, members of the LGBTQ community are less likely to have adult children to care for them. LGBTQ, GAY, Assisted, Living, Communities. Many LGBTQ community members have been forgotten or deserted by their own family members. This means there will be no relative or family member willing to oversee their care in their time of need. Most states, counties or cities, do not have domestic partner laws in place. This ensures that gay couples will face more challenges concerning their overall benefits. It is important to realize, that in the gay community, senior-related issues are still relatively new, as gay rights efforts have traditionally been youth focused. It should not matter if you are gay or straight, all individuals should have the same right to live in a place where people feel welcome and happy, respecting each other as part of a society. As we mentioned in other chapters, the selection of a facility should not be based on how fancy it is or how the person looks who is giving you a tour. It is about the WHOLE package, i.e.; employees, surroundings, clinical, services, activities, and in this case, the population and the supportive services available to the LGBTQ community. It is important to understand that, along with having lovely accommodations and great amenities, recreational activities are important as well. Recreational activities can vary from arts and crafts classes, to outings such as shows, movies, theater, dinner, shopping etc… and why not be able to go to a bar within reasonable hours… maybe for Happy Hour at 5 or 6 pm? For example, here is a question you may want to keep in mind. If you or your loved one is accustomed to having a drink every day at 6 pm, can you still have it in the new community you have chosen? The intention of this chapter is for you to be able to think about what is relevant to you and your loved one. It is not to create arguments or cause problems. You or your Caregiver must keep in mind that the selection of Alternative Housing, (Independent Living, Assisted Living, etc.) must meet some basic clinical, geographical, financial and psychosocial needs. Remember, in any community or society, there is always some form of discrimination among themselves. Society tends to label people and their behaviors rather than embrace and try to understand the differences. Finding out if a corporation offers same sex or partnership benefits to their employees is a good indication of what that corporation is about and if they are sensitive to diverse needs. You may find out that the person who is conducting the interview at the facility may be gay or gay friendly, but that does not mean that the facility or the corporation is.... Many questions and many answers.... Let me help you personally and assist you find that special place. Call me, Humberto. • What is the meaning of Assisted Living?

A FORBES Health online article defined Assisted Living Communities… FORBES Health Article: https://www.forbes.com/health/senior-living/what-is-assisted-living/ “Assisted Living Communities are for older adults who want to remain independent in a home-like setting, but need non-medical assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs)… After reading an overview about Assisted Living Communities, I decided to take this important matter and subject to the next level for Floridians. I would like to dig deeper into this question and be more specific for residents of Broward, Palm Beach, and Dade Counties. Each state has different regulations and agencies who monitor and regulate Assisted Living Communities. Assisted Living Facilities are licensed and surveyed by the State of Florida. All Placement Counselors Corp. facilities that we represent, are licensed and monitored by ACHA, the Florida Agency for HealthCare Administration. In the state of Florida Assisted Living Facilities (ALF) provide full-time living arrangements in the least restrictive and most home-like setting. The basic services include, but are not limited to: Housing and nutritional meals. Help with the activities of daily living, such as: · Toileting · Bathing · Dressing · Eating · Walking · Physical Transfer · Medication Management · Arrange for Health Care Services · Provide or Arrange for Transportation to Health Care Services · Health Monitoring · Respite Care · Social Activities. Let’s keep in mind, there are many different Assisted Living Communities in Southeast Florida. In Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties, there is a range of facilities you can select, from large to small. In SE Florida, Assisted Living Communities have evolved and specialized, while developing their own niche. You can find facilities from those offering assistance with basic Activities of Daily Living, like meals service and activities, to those with luxury accommodations and amenities, such as spas, bars and even concierge services. Some of the specializations in these Assisted Living Communities is the care of Alzheimer’s or related dementias in special care units. These Memory Care units are usually, but not always secure and or locked units. Keep in mind, just because someone was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or Dementia doesn’t mean that they have to be in a secured unit. Let’s keep in mind that Assisted Living Communities are typically equipped with 24-hour, on-site staff and provide up to three prepared meals supervised by a dietitian, as well as Housekeeping and some Transportation services, in many cases. The secret of how to select the correct Assisted Living Facility for yourself or your loved one, is the combination of the resident’s needs, whether it be Geographical, Physical, financial or the care that is needed. Our goal and expectation at Placement Counselors Corporation is to guide and help narrow the search, based on the client’s physical, emotional, clinical, financial, and geographical needs. Our Counselors are professionals with diverse levels of education and experience in the health care field. We tap into our Counselor’s education and experience to identify the right resources to address your needs. PCC networks on an on-going basis with Doctors, Attorneys, Social Workers, Real Estate Agents, and many other professionals. Together, we are able to assist in placing people in alternative housing at no cost to the client. • How to Understand Assisted Living Facilities or Alternative Housing for the Elderly?

By Humberto Fortuna MA MS How to Understand Assisted Living Facilities or Alternative Housing for the Elderly? When Assisted Living Facilities were first created, they were more like a Retirement community. BUT NOT NOW. If a person had incontinence issues or required more personal care, they would have to leave the facility and go to a Skilled Nursing Home. Eventually, the government and the healthcare industry worked together to create regulated communities to provide appropriate care in order to meet the needs of each individual. Once the Assisted Living Facilities were established, the need for other types of alternative housing came to light such as Independent Living, Adult Family Care Homes and Alzheimer-Dementia Units. In Florida, small, six bed facilities (private homes) are gaining popularity due to the fact that they can provide even more personalized care. They are licensed and regulated by the same agencies that govern all the Assisted Living Facilities, regardless of size. Many people do not completely understand the concept of, or what is actually offered in an Assisted Living Facility (ALF). A prospective candidate is usually in need of at least one or more Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Some of the ADLs are showering, dressing, toileting and medication management. The staff of an ALF is trained to provide assistance with all of those ADLs along with housekeeping, laundry, transportation and social activities. Most facilities are paid for by private, “out of pocket” funds. However, financial assistance can be found through the Veteran’s Administration, Long Term Care Insurance, and state programs, if certain requirements are met. Overall, the best way to describe Assisted Living is to think of it as a bridge between living at home and living in a Skilled Nursing Facility. Assisted Living has a residential focus with a home-like environment while a Nursing Home is primarily a medical institution. • How can I find an LGBTQ or commonly said Gay Assisted Living Facility in SE Fla?

by Humberto Fortuna MA, MS How can I find an LGBTQ or commonly said Gay Assisted Living Facility? It is important to find out if the community you are interested in is involved with any gay organizations and how in tune they are to LGBTQ needs. If not, which may be the most common case, ask if they know of any gay organizations close to the facility so that you may be able to take advantage of their activities. Regarding accommodations, it is important that you know it is very normal for 2 men or 2 women to be accommodated in the same room as roommates. Many older adults cannot afford to have a private room and opt for sharing with another person. In fact, sharing a room is more the norm that having a private accommodation. Assisted Living Communities offer special spousal fees, rates and services to straight couples. We have set up a question format so that you will be able to take advantage of these benefits if it applies in your state, based on your legal status. Some of the benefits are second person fees, couple fees, security deposits, etc. As we mentioned in previous chapters, there is a second person special rate. It is important to understand how this second person rate can work for you, if it is applicable. Depending on what state you are in, and their laws, you may or may not be able to take advantage of this specific rate for couples. The second person rate usually applies to a spouse of a heterosexual couple. If your state approves same sex marriages then you can argue the point that you should be entitled to receive this benefit. For example, a husband and wife move into a facility together. The regular monthly rate in this scenario will be $2000 per person. Due to the fact that they are husband and wife, one will pay the $2000 and the other will pay the second person rate. The second person rate can be as little as half of the regular rate. This heterosexual couple will then pay $2000 for one, $1000 for the second person rate with a total of $3000 for the couple’s monthly rate. Therefore, if agay couple cannot benefit from this second person rate scenario, they will have to pay $2000 each to live in the same accommodations. It is also the norm to leave the community for a specific event. Many residents go to family functions, travel to visit relatives or just go out to dinner with a friend. While this is normal, it is important to respect the rules in your new community. Remember that these communities are regulated by a governmental agency and the community itself must follow rules and regulations. Most have a sign out sheet. This record is important for your safety. Imagine if there were a fire and they could not find you? Or if your family called and the facility had no idea where you were? You can see that this could cause serious issues. Lake Park: Lake Park Care Center, 750 Bayberry Dr @561.881.8144. Lake Worth: The Village of High Ridge, 1800 South Dr @561.588.4333. • Resistance is the only thing that can keep you from what you WANT

By Humberto Fortuna MA , MS I believe in alternative and complementation of theories and practices that you need to adopt for your evolvement and the emotional freedom that you are trying so desperately to achieve. I am using the word, desperate at times because, if you are reading this book about emotional independency, it seems that you must have been thinking about it for a long time. And, this has led you to make the first step toward what you cannot find and want to achieve. Hopefully, the level of desperation is not out of control but you do feel challenged by not having the freedom that you had at one point on your journey, but now, no longer have. That is not a good feeling, at all! Resistance is the only thing that can keep you from what you want. Believe in what you want. Feel your desire for it while going over every question you have. You WILL find an answer. For every problem, there is a solution. For every misunderstanding, there is an understanding. For every confusion, there is clarity. Everything will happen because of the power of your desire, your conscious intention, and by being the engine of the emotional freedom that is so much desired. This feeling will allow you to feel that you are definitely expanding and you are not limiting yourself to just one spot of your situation. We all have a hard time getting our thoughts under control and we just need to remind ourselves that we are part of the universe and Source. Being part of Source, you are just a projection in a physical body having a life experience. This is why you just need to allow what it is without resistance as part of your journey. With the Law of Attraction, you can understand how you are part of Source and the universe. You are always creating new vibrations and desires and you will become whatever you are asking vibrationally for. This vibrational desire will convert into manifestation eventually. You are the creator of your own journey that you are consciously seeing, feeling, and being part of. It is your inner being that you are now connected to. It is the fuel of your desires that will be manifesting when you do everything consciously and without resistance. Now you can see and experience that what you are asking for is part of your creation while creating your own reality. This is the best way for you to consciously understand that you can ask for things and the universe will give them to you. But most important is to trust yourself as your best guide, because it is within you. I can only say that the Law of Attraction saved my mental sanity and I applied it as if it were my daily breathing. This allowed me to expand and align my vibrations with my desires and intentions. It is an inspiration for me to just talk about the Law of Attraction. It literally allowed me to expand the new version of myself. The version that I must now be! I love the version that I am now, evolved and healed in many areas. I can see how I let myself go with my thoughts out of control and my drama creating a false reality that was keeping me apart from my expansion. This separation from my being was terrible and very hurtful. Release your old habits of the past as they are the only things that are obstructing you from becoming who you truly are and not what life has caused you to become, or to be. We are in a state of constant evolution and growth with pure positive energy. You ARE love and you ARE loved. When you feel you are not enough or dissatisfied, that means that you are putting up resistance and you are not allowing yourself to be the TRUE YOU.... LEARN more about EMOTIONAL DEPENDENCY FREEDOM ----HERE As you go through an evaluation of your journey, you will realize that there are many things that you may need to change in order for you to achieve what you are looking for. This book is an evaluation of an individual that has just come out of a relationship healing process. That individual is me. Or, it could be you. As you heal, you ask yourself, “How come I didn’t see this before?” Maybe now you realize that must be changed for the sole purpose of achieving peace of mind, happiness, or even some sort of freedom and independency in your life. Emotional Dependency can occur in many types of relationships, not just in a romantic, love relationship. Emotional relationships include children with their parents, parents with their children, co-workers or any situation that is causing you to be dependent. If you do not find your ‘true self,’ and become true to your feelings, nothing will work, especially with a dependency. It is my intention to help you by sharing my experiences as well as teaching you how to embrace and honor yourself. In my case, I did a complementation of traditional and alternative medicine treatments that I will share with you throughout this book. As an Energy Healer, I needed to combine the traditional and the alternative for a more natural healing process. I will teach you how to use the Law of Attraction, Akashic Records, Meditation, and exercises and techniques that helped me to achieve what I was looking for. I will show you how we are all surrounded by messages as well as learning to recognize and interpret them. As part of the alternative methodology that I used, I will share my experiences with my archangels and spiritual guides. While using ‘mindfulness,’ you will reconnect with unconditional love.
