What are the requirements for an Assisted Living Facility in Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach County?

Updated: Oct 23, 2023

By Humberto Fortuna MA, MS

Assisted living facilities in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties of Florida are expected to meet certain logistical requirements to ensure that residents live in a positive, accessible, and home-like atmosphere. All Assisted Living Facilities in Broward, Dade and Palm Beach County with more than two residents must be licensed.

The state of Florida allows facilities in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties to provide either private rooms or apartments with single and multiple – occupancy bedrooms within shared spaces.

Many Assisted Living Facilities include Small Group Home facilities who offer Private or Semi-private accommodations. However, both types of accommodations require lockable doors, full – use kitchens or prepared meals, a minimum of square footage, and accessibility features for people with reduced visual and functional capacity.

Private assisted living apartments are expected to offer at least 80 square feet per resident. Multiple – occupancy rooms can accommodate no more than two residents and should have a minimum of 60 square feet of usable space per person.

It is important to mention that if a room is multiple – occupancy, at least 35 feet of living and dining space is expected to be provided per resident. Bathrooms may be shared, but at least one lavatory and one bathing area must be provided per every six and eight residents, respectively.

These days, Retirement Homes or Senior Living Facilities are the most searchable words online, as families are looking for an Alternative Housing or a place for Mom, Dad or a loved one. Many times, families begin their online search with sentences like, Elder Care Home Services or In- Home Services for Seniors as an alternative to Assisted Living Facility or a Nursing Home. Families are starting to realize that In-home care for the elderly is not always the best choice financially. That’s when families begin to search for an Assisted Living Facility near them, without understanding what to ask or look for, or what they really need, based on the care, budget, and geographical needs.

At times, a Medicaid Nursing Home is recommended or is the appropriate choice for a specific moment.
