When is an Alzheimer’s Dementia Care Secured Unit Needed?

Special accommodations, as well as a Memory Care Program are designed for residents with Alzheimer’s Dementia, as well as other types of Dementia. Such accommodations include separate living areas and specifically designed daily activities for the residents. The facility’s staff is trained in the care of patients with Alzheimer’s Dementia and other related Dementias.

Secured Units are designed and made available for those who have wandering behaviors, as well as those who do not know how to go from Point A to Point B.

Wandering and becoming lost is common among people with Alzheimer's disease or other disorders causing dementia. This behavior can happen in the early stages of dementia, even if the person has never wandered in the past.

Many clients have a feeling that they need to go to work or maybe they are looking for a loved one.

So, let’s take a minute and think….If a person with dementia is returning home from regular walks and arriving later than usual, or is forgetting how to get to familiar places, he or she may be wandering, and/or getting lost.

If this is the case, an Alzheimer’s Dementia Care Secured Unit is crucial!

Wandering isn't necessarily harmful if it occurs in a safe and controlled environment. However, wandering can pose safety issues outside of a controlled environment, especially in very hot and cold temperatures, or if the person with dementia ends up in an unsafe or secluded area.

In a controlled environment,  facilities  provide a personalized experience through stimulating activities and thoughtfully designed living spaces.

Many times, people think if a person becomes incontinent or has a cognitive impairment, they must go to a nursing home. This is not always true.

As a Geriatric Specialist, I would say that the most important thing is to have a person in the correct environment, with the correct services they need.

In an Assisted Living Facility or ALF, incontinence is not a problem. Also, depending on the cognitive impairment, that may not be an issue either.  There are facilities that are trained to handle certain clinical issues as well as some behaviors. There are also ALFs with a Limited Mental Health license that are trained to host clients with Mental Health issues as well.

Let’s talk about Assisted Living vs Nursing Home. The best way to describe Assisted Living is to think of it as a bridge between living at home and living in a nursing home. ALF’s offer assistance with Activities of Daily Living such as Toileting, Incontinence, Feeding, Ambulation, Showering and Dressing etc.

Assisted Living is an exciting option for individuals who want to maximize their independence while living in the safety of a supervised, residential setting. Knowing which is the correct place  for you or your loved one takes knowledge, research, and time.
